The Fateful Voyage, based on the friendship between Rupert Brooke and two composers who were killed in the war, William Denis Browne and FS Kelly, commissioned for James Gilchrist and Iain Burnside by City of London Festival, broadcast BBC Radio 3.
With Iain Burnside a sympathetic accompanist, tenor James Gilchrist sang everything with beseeching ardour, yet the most moving passage was non-musical: an excerpt from Kelly’s diary, written in 1915, listing the works he hoped to finish. He never did.
